Marigold

  • In a "bouncy Bollywood meets Hollywood romantic comedy" (BBC Films), Ali Larter stars as feisty B-list actress Marigold Lexton, who, stranded and broke in Goa, India, after financing flops on her low-budget film, lands a role in a musical to pay her way home. Eager to prove herself, she seeks famed choreographer Prem Rajput's (Bollywood superstar Salman Khan) guidance, and a whirlwind romance begi
Marvel Comics is gearing up for a big Ultimate Universe winter with the release of the Ultimate Marvel Free Sampler. The special is a sneak peek for upcoming titles, including December's Ultimates 3 #1 and January's Ultimate Iron Man II #1 and Ultimate Human #1. But it's what these titles are leading up to that might be of new interest to Marvel followers!

We've all heard of the Big Bang, and yet few of us truly know what it is.

Renowned for making difficult ideas much less difficult than t! hey might first appear, Simon Singh is our perfect guide to explaining why cosmologists believe that the Big Bang is an accurate description of the origin and evolution of the universe.

This highly readable and entertaining book tells the story of the many brilliant, often eccentric scientists who fought against the establishment idea of an eternal and unchanging cosmos. From such early Greek cosmologists as Anaximander to recent satellite measurements taken deep in space, Big Bang is a narrative full of anecdotes and personal histories. With characteristic clarity, Simon Singh tells the centuries-long story of mankind's attempt to understand how the universe came to be, a story which itself begins some 14 billion years ago (give or take a billion years). Simon Singh shows us that it is within the capability of all of us -- in his expert hands -- to understand the Big Bang: the fundamental theory in all of science, and a high point -- perhaps the high point --! of human achievement.

A baffling array of science books cl! aim to r eveal how the mysteries of the universe have been discovered, but Simon Singh's Big Bang actually delivers on that promise. General readers will find it to be among the very best books dealing with cosmology, because Singh follows the same plan he used in his brilliant Code Book: he puts people--not equations--first in the story. By linking the progression of the Big Bang theory with the scientists who built it up bit by bit, Singh also uncovers an important truth about how such ideas grow.
Death is an essential element in the progress of science, since it takes care of conservative scientists of a previous generation reluctant to let go of an old, fallacious theory and embrace a new and accurate one.
As harsh as this statement seems, even Einstein defended an outmoded idea about the universe when an unknown interloper published equations challenging the great man. Einstein didn't have to die for cosmology to move forward (he reluctan! tly apologized for being wrong), but stories like this one show how difficult it can sometimes be for new theories to take root. Fred Hoyle, who coined the term "big bang" as a way to ridicule the idea of a universe expanding from some tiny origin point, strongly believed that the cosmos was in a steady state. But Singh shows how Hoyle's research, meant to prove the contrary, added evidence to the expansion model. Big Bang is also a history of astronomical observation, describing the development of new telescopes that were crucial to the development of cosmology. Handwritten summary notes at the end of each long chapter add a charming, classroom feel to this revealing and very readable book. --Therese LittletonStarring: Naseeruddin Shah, Dimple Kapadia, Saif Ali Khan, Boman IraniSynopsis:Being Cyrus is Saif Ali Khan's next film after the hugely successful 'Salaam Namaste' and 'Parineeta' and marks his debut in English language cinema, revealing his versatility! and ability to break the usual mould. The film revolves aroun! d the ra ther dysfunctional Sethna family and swings between Panchgani, a small hill station where retired sculptor Dinshaw Sethna (Naseerudin Shah) lives in relative isolation with his wife (Dimple Kapadia) and an old dilapidated building in Bombay where the other Sethnas, played by Boman Irani and Simone Singh, live. One day Dinshaw opens his house to a stranger, Cyrus (Saif Ali Khan), who gratefully accepts his invitation but as Cyrus befriends the family all the previously hidden cracks begin to open.

Being Cyrus revolves around the relationships of a dysfunctional Parsi family. Dinshaw Sethna is a retired sculptor and lives with his wife Katy in Panchgani hills in a dilapidated, rundown house. Back in Mumbai his brother, Farokh lives with his wife Tina and their father. Cyrus is not related to any of them, but out of the blue turns up at Dinshaw's hou! se in Panchgani. He wants to be an assistant to Dinshaw, he wants to learn sculpting and pottery and ends up staying on for a year with the Sethna's in Panchgani. During this time there seems to be an affair going on between Katy and Cyrus. During his stay many clandestine activities involving Cyrus takes place. He receives some money for an undisclosed reason and he is shown working in a lab on something secret. Next Cyrus adopts the home of Farokh Sethna in Mumbai. They live in a typical Parsi colony in Mumbai. Their father lives in a small room in their apartment, but his son Farokh does not treat him well. Cyrus befriends their father. However, Farokh dislikes this man instantly and does not trust him. Also simultaneously, Katy keeps getting some mysterious calls from Mumbai. Tina, Farokh's wife befriends a cop, Lovely. As the story unfolds, one can see that there is a serious underlying problem with each of these seemingly ordinary characters. Everyone in the Sethna ho! usehold has their own personal agenda and tries to make use of! Cyrus. Cyrus too has a strange, dark and foreboding side to him. As the plot unfurls we get to see the morbid, queer and distasteful side to each of these characters. In a "bouncy Bollywood meets Hollywood romantic comedy" (BBC Films), Ali Larter stars as feisty B-list actress Marigold Lexton, who, stranded and broke in Goa, India, after financing flops on her low-budget film, lands a role in a musical to pay her way home. Eager to prove herself, she seeks famed choreographer Prem Rajput's (Bollywood superstar Salman Khan) guidance, and a whirlwind romance begins...until Marigold discovers Prem holds a powerful, inescapable past--and a future that holds no place for her.

Say Anything

  • Running time 100 minutes
  • rated PG-13
  • includes Binus Features
  • Special Edition DVD Movie
Frankie (Ione Skye) is looking for a man "with the soul of a poet and eyes like Frank Sinatra." Her world is black and white--literally in this film--until the blue eyes of David (Mackenzie Astin) enter the café where she works with her uncle and cousin. But Frankie's about to leave San Francisco for L.A. with her best friend, Allison (Jennifer Aniston), where they'll both become actresses. Time is running out for Frankie to convince David that she's the love of his life.

Unfortunately for Frankie, and this film, the lackluster plot and trite characters don't give her much to work with. The dialogue is atrocious (Frankie says, with complete sincerity, "I'm going to circumnavigate his soul until he's anchored on all sides by my love"), and her character is so utterly spoiled and! obnoxious you can't understand what David--or her friends--see in her. What makes the film all the more disappointing is the promising cast. Jennifer Aniston is underused, and Michael Landes does the best he can with his clichéd role as a gay man who desperately wants to come out to his father but can't work up the courage. Dream for an Insomniac tries too hard to be the kind of hip '90s love story that films such as Walking and Talking and Naked in New York succeed in being. --Jenny Brown In this charming critically-acclaimed tale of first love, Lloyd (John Cusack), an eternal optimist, seeks to capture the heart of Diane, an unattainable high school beauty and straight-A student (Ione Skye). He surprises just about everyone-including himself-when she returns the sentiment. But Diane's over-possessive, divorced Dad (John Mahoney) doesn't approve and it's going to take more than just the power of love to conquer all.Seven years after he earned ! his first screen credit as the writer of Fast Times at Ridg! emont Hi gh, former Rolling Stone writer Cameron Crowe made his directorial debut with this acclaimed romantic comedy starring John Cusack and Ione Skye as unlikely lovers on the cusp of adulthood. The casting is perfect, and Crowe's rookie direction is appropriately unobtrusive, no doubt influenced by his actor-loving, Oscar®-winning mentor, James L. Brooks. But the real strength of Crowe's work is his exceptional writing, his timely grasp of contemporary rhythms and language (he's frequently called "the voice of a generation"), and the rich humor and depth of his fully developed characters. In Say Anything... Cusack and Skye play recent high school graduates enjoying one final summer before leaping into a lifetime of adult responsibilities. Lloyd (Cusack) is an aspiring kickboxer with no definite plans; Diane (Skye) is a valedictorian with intentions to further her education in Europe. Together they find unlikely bliss, but there's also turbulence when Diane's fa! ther (John Mahoney)--who only wants what's best for his daughter--is charged with fraud and tax evasion. Favoring strong performances over obtrusive visual style, Crowe focuses on his unique characters and the ambitions and fears that define them; the movie's a treasure trove of quiet, often humorous revelations of personality. Lili Taylor and Eric Stoltz score high marks for memorable supporting roles, and Cusack's own sister Joan is perfect in scenes with her onscreen and offscreen brother. A rare romantic comedy that's as funny as it is dramatically honest, Say Anything... marked the arrival of a gifted writer-director who followed up with the underrated Singles before scoring his first box-office smash with Jerry Maguire. --Jeff Shannon

Eva Longoria may be most recognized for her role as Desperate Housewives’ saucy Gabrielle Solis, but on her own time, there are few places she would rather be than in the kitchen, cooking the food she loves for her family and friends. Here is the food Eva loves to eat, and the recipes in Eva’s Kitchen trace her life story, taking readers on her culinary journeyâ€"from the food she was brought up on to the recipes inspired by her travels abroad to the dishes she serves during casual nights at home.

Having grown up on a ranch with every meal based on what was in the family fields, Eva believes, like so many of us, that good cooking relies on local, fresh, easy-to-find in! gredients. In Eva̢۪s Kitchen, she teaches readers essential cooking skills and she sprinkles in the histories and traditions behind her favorite dishes, including personal stories and anecdotes that capture the warmth, humor, and joy of her most memorable meals.

In her first cookbook, Eva welcomes you into her kitchen, offering 100 of her favorite dishesâ€"many of which are family recipes collected over the yearsâ€"all fused with her passion for cooking. She also shares memories of her Texas ranch upbringing, her very first cooking adventures, vacations overseas, nights in with her girlfriends, and last-minute preâ€"red carpet meals.

Inspired by her heritage, Eva highlights the essentials of great Mexican cooking, Texas styleâ€"with her family’s recipes and techniques for making the world’s best tamales, homemade tortillas, Spanish rice, and Pan de Polvo (Mexican pastry), to name a few. She also offers dishes from a variety of internat! ional cuisines, from Latin American to Italian and French, ins! pired by her globe-trotting travels. A taste of Lemon Dover Sole whisks Eva to a tiny hotel-restaurant she once visited on a trip to Normandy; the recipe for Cannellini Beans with Crushed Red Pepper was a souvenir from a trip to Florence; kimchi adds a kick to her Spicy Roasted Brussels Sprouts, a Thanksgiving staple; and Yellow Squash Soup with Lemon brings her full circle, back to her family’s vegetable garden in Corpus Christi.

With full-color food photographs, intimate portraits of her family and friends, and a glimpse into Eva’s home and her lesser-known domestic side (family first, acting second, she says), Eva’s debut cookbook will entice her loyal fans and inspire home cooks to broaden their culinary horizons and create memorable meals for the people they love.Eva Longoria may be most recognized for her role as Desperate Housewives’ saucy Gabrielle Solis, but on her own time, there are few places she would rather be than in the kitchen, cooking ! the food she loves for her family and friends. Featured Recipe: Mint Lemonade

Mint Lemonade
Makes 3 cups; about 4 servings

For lemonade

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup hot water
  • 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice (from 4 lemons)
For mint lemonade
(2 servings)

  • About 12 (3 1/2 cups) ice cubes
  • 1 1/2 cups lemonade, plus more if needed
  • 6 to 7 sprigs of fresh mint, plus more for garnish

We had lemon trees and mint all over our ranch when I was a kid. I don̢۪t remember when I tasted the two together for the first time, but since then I̢۪ve never liked lemonade any other way. For kids or anyone not drinking alcohol, it̢۪s a fabulously festive and beautiful nonalcoholic treat. Or add a shot of rum or vodka to each glass and make a cocktail out of it!

Instructions
1. To prepare the lemonade, place the sugar and hot water in a 2-quart container. Close tightly and shake until the sugar is dissolved. Add the lemon juice and enough cold water to make 3 cups total. Shake until well combined.

2. To make 2 servings of mint lemonade, place the ice in a blenderâ€"it sh! ould fill the blender about halfway. Pour over the lemonade. P! ull the leaves off the mint and add to the blender. Puree until well blended and slushy. If too liquidy, add more ice and puree; if too slushy, add a little more lemonade and puree until well blended.

3. Pour into two 12-ounce glasses. Garnish each with a mint sprig and serve immediately.
